Fix App Store screenshot upload errors and rejections
Find out whether App Store Connect rejected the file, put it in the wrong place, or sent back App Review feedback. Each problem has a different fix.

Identify where the problem occurs
Start with the exact message and the screenshot well you used. An upload error usually concerns the file or its placement. A screenshot that uploads successfully but receives App Review feedback needs a content change. Keep these paths separate so you only redo the affected set.
- The image will not upload: Check pixel dimensions, PNG/JPEG format, and transparency in the free validator. Correct the file and export again if needed.
- The file uploads, but the expected device or language does not show it: Check the device tab, selected language, and Media Manager wells in App Store Connect.
- Apple reviewed and rejected the screenshots: Read the cited guideline, replace the affected slides, and explain the correction when resubmitting.
Fix upload errors
Check the actual files first. Apple’s screenshot specification accepts .jpeg, .jpg, and .png, with one to ten screenshots for each device size. Images cannot have an alpha channel or transparency. The filename alone does not prove the image format or pixel size. Drop a set into the free screenshot validator to check dimensions, PNG transparency and counts by device size in your browser. Check each localization separately; the tool cannot infer language from a file.
Match the device well. Apple’s current required iPhone class is the medium Dynamic Island display; it accepts portrait 1179 × 2556 or 1206 × 2622 pixels, with width and height reversed for landscape. Apps that support iPadOS also need a 13-inch iPad set. Use the full size reference to choose the right export. Apple can scale from a supplied high-resolution set when the interface is consistent, so check the actual wells and previews rather than assuming every device needs a separate upload.
Check where you uploaded it. On the app version page, select the platform, device tab, and intended language. Apple’s asset instructions explain where to find View All Sizes in Media Manager if you want to inspect or supply a size-specific set. Apple lists the app-version statuses in which screenshots can be uploaded; if the version has already been approved, create a new version to change its screenshots.
If the file fails these checks, correct and export it again. Open a free medium-display Starter project in Studio if you need to rebuild the slides; its default 1206 × 2622 export has no watermark. The validator checks file properties, not whether App Review will approve the content.
Show the app in use
Guideline 2.3.3 asks screenshots to show the app’s interface and functionality. Replace slides that only show a logo, login page, or splash screen with useful app screens. Text overlays are allowed. See Apple’s metadata guidelines.
Remove unrelated platform imagery
Guideline 2.3.10 covers other mobile platforms and marketplaces. Check device frames, status bars, badges, and captions for unrelated platform references. Apple allows an exception for specific, approved interactive functionality. Read the guideline if it applies to your app.
Check the rest of the content
Use fictional account details, ensure you have rights to the images, and make additional purchases clear when showing paid features. Replace placeholders and keep the screenshots appropriate for all audiences. These requirements are covered in Apple’s review guidelines.
Review the updated set
Preview each size and language in App Store Connect. In Studio, run pre-flight to catch missing images, low contrast, and untranslated captions. These checks help you review the design; they do not replace Apple’s review.
Upload the corrected files and respond to the issue Apple identified. Keep a note of what changed so the next release uses the corrected set.

Common questions
- What does Guideline 2.3.3 cover?
- Screenshots should show the app in use. Include useful screens from the app, rather than relying on title art, login pages, or splash screens.
- What does Guideline 2.3.10 cover?
- Keep screenshots focused on the supported Apple platform. Remove unrelated names, icons, and imagery from other mobile platforms or app marketplaces, unless covered by Apple’s exception for approved interactive functionality.
- Can I include text over my screenshots?
- Yes. Apple allows text and image overlays. Keep the interface visible and use captions to explain the feature shown.
- Can Studio guarantee approval?
- No. Studio’s pre-flight checks identify design issues such as missing screenshots, low contrast, and untranslated captions. You still need to review the content against Apple’s guidelines.
